s/v Mahal, Tartan 37C sloop
Ft. Lauderdale , FL - Lewes, DE
May 18 - 26, 2008
This is the story about the boat that Captain Scott and John bought on eBay. With the help
of a friend, they sailed it from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Lewes, DE in seven days. Most of the
voyage was without an engine because of clogged fuel lines. They covered 922
nautical
miles in those seven days. In their first 24 hour run they clocked 200 nautical miles.

John was getting very restless as provisioning and readying the ship for a sea passage
entered
into the third day. John Nelson and Doug
Hicks flew
down to sail the ship to her
new home in
Lewes, DE.

It was close, but this guy got out of the way just in time as Mahal was exiting the Port
Everglades,
Turning Basin Inlet, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

This inlet hosted some challenges that Indian River does not have.

John and Captain Scott are tying to figure out where they are. The answer was
about 200
nautical miles offshore of Northern Florida.

The seas in the Gulf Stream built up after a few days of 20 knot winds.

Chef Doug made his famous black bean soup for dinner.

John on watch.

In the Southern Latitudes it was nice to hang out in boxers and a T-shirt.

Doug at the helm. The solar panel on the bimini provided enough power for navigational
equipment,
sailing lights, cabin lights and occasionally the refrigerator.

As we passed Ocean City, MD John called his friend Jamie who came out in his power
boat to greet the ship. Captain Scott jumped onboard with Jamie to take pictures of Mahal.

From 5 knots to 50.
